Day 01

Arrival in ECUADOR: QUITO

Arrival in Quito, in the Andes, welcome trough your guide or your community representative and transfer to the hotel in the historic centre (about 1 hour) or your host family. Dinner optional (depends of the arrival time) and night.

 

Day 02

Quito – Ecuador Line (1) Otavalo

Breakfast in the hotel or in the host family. Then visit of the city of Quito and its historic center, dating of XVIth and XIXth century and classified Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco. Optional transfer and visit of “The Middle of the World”, in the North of Quito, where the fictitious Equator line goes and visit of the Ethno-Scientific Intiñan museum (1). Lunch free (or optional typical lunch). Then drive to the beautiful Andean region of Otavalo. Stop for a panoramic view at San Pablo Lake, dominated by the majestic Imbabura. Arrival in the Indigenous otavalian community and installation in a room of a families host. Meeting with some handicraft artists and farmers and tour of the community (or next day in the morning). Preparation of the dinner with the family. Local dinner then night.

 

Day 03

Otavalo

Breakfast with the family, then transfer with a family member or community member to the beautiful (if Saturday) then visit of the famous Indigenous market, considered the most important one in Latin America for its textiles and its big variety of handicrafts of all the countries. Finally return to the community and preparation of the lunch with the women of the family and lunch. Possible farm or handicraft activities or other tasks with the inhabitants. Rest then preparation of the dinner and night.

 

Day 04

Otavalo – Train (2) – Quilotoa

Breakfast with the family. Optional (only from Thursday to Sunday) transfer to the small station of Ibarra to take the train of the liberty (2), that passes the famous districts of the city e.g “white zone”, crossing the cordillera of the volcano Cayambe (3rd highest peak of the country with almost 5800m) then the subtropical valley of Chota, Arrival in the village of Salinas or 1st step and welcome through the local Afro community with a cultural presentation of typical dances and their handicrafts then local snack. OR optional visit of a rose plantation (3) OR visit and walk around the nice crater Cuicocha, dominated by the volcano Cuicocha OR voluntary work on favour of the community. Lunch free. Tour to the south along the famous Avenue of Volcanoes to the region of Cotopaxi (possibly in eruption) to the crater lake Quilotoa (if the status of the volcano allows) and walk to the lake and meeting with its Indigenous artisans, local artists. Possible climb on a donkey (optional). Dinner and night in a hostel created by a local indigenous.

Quilotoa – Baños

Local breakfast. If Sunday, Wednesday or Saturday possible visit of an Indigenous market if the region. Continuation along the avenue if volcanoes to the attractive thermal town of Baños. Guided walk around the town and meeting with some artists. Optional Thermal baths and/or in a “Cajon” (4). Lunch free. Dinner and Night with an inhabitant or in a small hostel.

 

Jour 06

Baños – Puyo

Breakfast. Trip to the door of the Amazon: Puyo. Optional mountainbiking and crossing “Tarabita” of the river Pastaza (5) to the river “Rio Verde”. Then walk to the Pailon del Diablo waterfallLunch free on the way. Then arrival to a botanic and ecologic farm near Puyo. Tour around its park, appreciation of its various plants, tropical trees, the majority with its biologist owner Gabriela and possible bath in the water and Dinner “Bio” and night in a room of a host.

 

Day 07

Puyo – Amazonie

“Bio” breakfast then voluntary work, helping Gabriela in the park. The after the “bio” lunch, continuation to the Amazonian region of Tena and the river Napo an affluent of the Amazon. Arrival by vehicle or by canoe to an indigenous Kichwa community or to a community lodge, surrounded by the tropical forest and close to a river. Welcome by its inhabitants and time for getting to know the community or the lodge. Dinner then night in a hut.

 

Day 08

Amazon

Depending on the accomondation in the community and on the community, possible participation in the indigenious ceremony of the “Guayusa” which gives good energy at 4h30. Then breakfast. Voluntary works for the community or morning in the Lodge. Then lunch. Afternoon hiking in the forest for observing medical and alimentary plants and the trees and possibly birds, monkeys and/or insects. Dinner then night in the community or in a lodge.

 

Day 09

Amazon

Breakfast. Community work or in the lodge and if possible participation in a planting and harvest process of local products (cacao, banana,…). Possible preparation and lunch. Explication of the hunting technics in the forest, bath and possible fishing in the late afternoon and learning how to use the sarbacane or other activities depending on the place of the trip. Optional activity, canyoning down a waterfall (6) Goodbye dinner and possible Indigenous legend.(*) Instead of that trip, option on your request, possible 5 day trip to the Huaorani indigenous in the region of the famous park Yasuni and territory Huaorani, really interesting on a human level and because of its rich primary forest (fauna and flora). Please see the details below.

 

Day 10

Amazon – Riobamba – Chimborazo

For those who like it and if possible early morning (or day before) fishing in the river. Breakfast. Optional Rafting expedition (7) on the river Jatun Yacu (level 3) on the region of Tena with a specialised guide for the river and lunch. Drive to the Andes, Riobamba, located at the foot of the highest Ecuadorian volcano: the Chimborazo. If the time allows it, panorama tour of the city. Lunch free on the way. Arrival in a communal accommodation of the volcano region. Meeting with its leaders and installation in the guesthouse. Dinner and night. 

 

Jour 11

Chimborazo – Salinas de Guaranda

Local breakfast in the community. Then meeting and voluntary work with farmers and cattle raisers of the community. Then transfer to a communal village in the region for lunching “lama”, visit the small local museum about that animal and walk in the countryside with a local guide and lamas for getting to know their medical plants and more. Continuation along a beautiful landscape bypass the Chimborazo to the communal village of Salinas de Guaranda, known for its chocolate and cheese factories and additionally for its exploration of salt. Dinner and night in a communal hostel.

 

Jour 12

Salinas de Guaranda

After the breakfast, visit if of a cheese factory and/or chocolate factory and if possible assist on the work. Tour in the beautiful region. Lunch and afternoon free for buying the communal local handicraft. Dinner then night in the same hostel. 

 

Jour 13

Salinas – Guayaquil – Return Fligth or Galapagos Island 

Early breakfast then drive splendid, contrasting, radically down from the high Andes to the coastal region, subtropical warm, cacao, palms and banana manufactures. Local lunch free during the drive. Along the province “Los Rios” for passing the coastal city of Guayaquil, the biggest one of the country and known for the biggest harbour. If the time allows it, panorama tour of the city then transfer to the airport and flight back home in the evening (normally).

 

(*) Or optional and on your request, night in Guayaquil for leaving the next morning or extend your travel to the pacific coast or Galapagos.
