Day 01

Arrival in Ecuador – Quito (2856m)

Arrive in the evening to Ecuador’s capital city, Quito (9,350 ft). Welcome by your guide and transfer to the hotel. Welcome drink. Night in Quito.

 

Day 02

Quito – Cable Car up to the Volcano Pichincha (optional)

In the morning visit Quito’s historic center, one of the best-preserved in all of Latin America and a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site. Optional visit to the archaeology or reptile museum. OR optional trip up Pichincha Volcano (13,400 ft) in a cable car, with panoramic views of Quito and the Andean Cordillera at the top. Night in the same hotel in Quito.

 

Day 03

Quito – Equator Line – Mindo

Travel to the “Middle of the World” ”, in the north of Quito, where the fictitious equator line lies and marks the 00’00 latitude established in the XVIII century thanks to the famous 1st French Geodesic Mission. Visit the Equatorial Monument and the Intiñan Ethno-Scientific Museum. Then continue on to Mindo, a small town located in the cloud forest, famous for its birds, orchids, butterflies and waterfalls. Dinner and night in an ecolodge in the forest near a small river.

 

Day 04

Mindo – Quito

Optional: Early morning walk to go bird watching. Hike to one or more waterfalls and visit a butterfly farm and hummingbird reserve. Optional: Spectacular tubing down the river (depending on the river level), zipline across the canyon, mountain bike, or ride a horse. Visit of a small chocolate factory with tasting. Optional fresh Tilapia fish lunch – highly recommended. Drive back to Quito with optional stop in a hummingbird observatory. Night in Quito. (Extra night in Mindo for doing all the possible activities is available upon request)

 

Day 05

Quito – Otavalo

Drive to the beautiful Andean region of Otavalo, famous for its volcanoes, lakes, and indigenous culture. Optional visit to a rose plantation or Condor Park to observe native birds of prey. On the way, stop at San Pablo Lake at the foot of Imbabura Volcano. Visit the indigenous market in Otavalo, famous for its large variety of textiles and handicrafts. Travel to an indigenous community. Dinner and night in an indigenous community.

 

Day 06

Otavalo – Train Salinas – Quito

Travel in the morning to the small train station in Ibarra (operates from Wednesday to Sunday) ride the train from the Andean Cordillera to the subtropical Chota valley and up to the Afro-Ecuadorian village of Salinas. Welcoming by the Afro-Ecuadorian community, tasting of a local snack, presentation of their handicrafts, dance, and music. Optional lunch in a restaurant in the community. Then return to Otavalo. Visit to Cuicocha crater lake. Return to Quito. Dinner and night in a hotel.

 

Day 07

Quito – Volcano Antisana –  Baños

Excursion and walk to the national reserve of the volcano Antisana and optional hike around La Mica lake. Observation of native birds and views of the magnificent Antisana. Then drive along the Avenue of Volcanoes. Continuation to the beautiful town of Baños, famous for its hot springs and its location at the base of Tungurahua Volcano. Optional: Thermal baths and spa treatments. Night in Baños.

 

Day 08

Baños – Puyo

Drive or bike to the spectacular Pailon del Diablo waterfall, one of the biggest in Latin America. Then drive (or bike) to Puyo, “the gateway to the Amazon”, to an ecolodge. Tour through the forest, with biologist guide Gabriela, of its incredible botany, orchid garden, fish ponds, and shrimp pools, with the option of taking a clay bath in the river. Dinner and night in a farmhouse accommodation.

 

Day 09

Puyo – Misahualli – Amazon

Drive down to the town of Tena, located in the Amazon region. Optional rafting down the Jatun Yacu River (class III+/-) to the village of Puerto Napo. Lunch on a beach and afternoon swimming. Or visit a zoo of monkeys. Then drive to the Napo River and arrive at a lodge or an Indigenous community in the rainforest. Optional stay in a lodge with pool and panoramic view. Dinner and night in a lodge.

 

Day 10/11

Amazon

Canoe ride and walk through the forest with an Indigenous kichwa guide, observing flora, medicinal plants, birds, and possibly mammals. Later, visit to the native animal shelter or an indigenous home or other optional activities. Dinner and night in the lodge.

 

Day 12

Amazon – Papallacta – Quito

Final breakfast in the rainforest, then drive back to the Andes. On the way, optional bathing in hot springs at Papallacta. Last night in Quito in a hotel close to the airport.

 

Day 13

Quito – Return: Flight Back

Transfer to the airport for flight home.
