Day 1

Arrival in Ecuador: Quito

Morning flight, evening arrival to Ecuador’s capital, Quito (9,350 ft). Transportation to the hotel from the airport. Welcome drink. Night in Quito.



Day 2

Quito – Equator Line – Otavalo

Morning dedicated to tour of Quito, a city surrounded by volcanoes, most prominently by Pichincha volcano (15,750 ft). Quito was founded by the Inca civilization and developed by the Spanish colonizers. Its historic center is a true architectural jewel, dating back to the XVIth and XIXth century and registered by the Cultural Heritage of Humanity by Unesco for its unique touristic sites, churches, and colonial convents. Then, travel to “The Middle of the World”, in the north of Quito, where the fictitious Equator line runs along the monument. The line marks the 00’00 latitude established in XVIII century thanks to the famous 1st French Geodesic Mission. Visit of the Equator monument and its neo-colonial village. Optionally, a visit of the Ethno-Scientific Intiñan museum, where you can stand on the true latitude 0 line. Then, drive to the beautiful Andean region of Otavalo. Stop for a panoramic view of San Pablo Lake, dominated by the majestic Imbabura mountain. Chose from a night at a charming hotel  in Otavalo or a night in a host family home in an Indigenous community.


Day 3

Otavalo: Market, Volcanoes, Lakes, Artisans – Quito

Optional: travel to Ibarra in a short trip by the train called “Tren de la Libertad”. Visit the indigenous artisanal market in Otavalo, famous for its large variety of textiles and handicrafts or tour of the community, meeting its residents and farmer. Optional tour to the villages of Peguche and Cotacachi; San Pablo Lake and Cuicocha Lake, at the foot of Imbabura and Cotacachi Volcanoes. Return to Quito and stay the night.



Day 4

Quito – Baños

Drive along the Avenue of Volcanoes to Cotopaxi Volcano. Optional visit of the indigenous market in the Cotopaxi region: Pujili, Saquisili, or Zumbagua (open Wednesday, Saturday or Sunday respectively). Continuation to the beautiful town of Baños, famous for its hot springs and its location at the base of Tungurahua Volcano. Guided walk around the town. Optional Thermal baths (5USD). Night in a small charming hotel.


Day 5

Baños – Amazonia

Travel by small boat on the river “Rio Verde” and hike to Pailon del Diablo waterfall. Drive down to the town of Tena, located in the Amazon region. Arrive at a lodge or community in the rainforest on the banks of the Napo River, a tributary of the Amazon River. Take a short walk in the surrounding forest. Other optional activities available. Dinner and night in a lodge.


Day 6


Day trip in the Amazonian rainforest with indigenous Kichwas guides. Discover the diverse flora and fauna the rainforest has to offer during the morning walk (3 hours) through the secondary forest. You will see the gigantic Ceiba trees, become educated on certain medical plants, and hike to the «Mirador» or view point to admire the immense beauty of the forest. Optional visit to an animal reserve. Breakfast during the hike or in the lodge. Take a dip  in the river or visit an indigenous family and observe  their handicrafts and hunting methods. Dinner and night in the lodge.

Day 7

Amazon – Riobamba or Volcano Chimborazo

Optional depending on the number of persons, travel to the Jatun Yacu riverbed- rafting (75USD +/-). Drive to Riobamba, the capital of the province Chimborazo at the foot of the highest Ecuadorian volcano: Chimborazo (20,702 ft). Tour around the city or walk to the volcano. Night with an indigenous community “Puruhae” (includes dinner) or stay night in a hostel in the mountain with an incredible panoramic view of Chimborazo.


Day 8

Riobamba – Andes Train – Ingapirca – Cuenca

Breakfast in the hotel. Travel to Alausi train station and take a train ride through the famous Devil’s Nose up to Sibambe. Back to Alausí and drive to the beautiful city of Cuenca. On the way, stop to visit the Incan ruins of Ingapirca and its small museum. Arrival in Cuenca and night in a hotel.


Day 9

Cuenca – Guayaquil

Visit Cuenca’s historic center, a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site, and visit a Panama hat factory. Optional visit to a museum or a tour of the Gualaceo Valley. Overnight in Cuenca or Guayaquil.
Travel through the coastal region and arrive in Guayaquil, the largest city in Ecuador. Night tour of Guayaquil. Visit the famous “Malecon 2000” and the historic neighborhood “Las Peñas”. Night in a hotel.


Day 10

Guayaquil  – Return: Flight Home OR Galapagos Islands extension

Transfer to the airport for flight home OR extension to the Galapagos Islands: Cruise or Land Based Tour (5-8 days recommended)

(Or optional additional night in Cuenca to visit the valley of Cualaceo, Chordeleg, or the aborigines culture museum. The following day enjoy a hike in the Park of Lake Cajas. Additional night in Guayaquil, optional. )
